How to Choose a Dedicated Internet Provider: 10 Questions to Ask

Most dedicated internet providers look alike on a website. The differences show up in the contract and on the day something breaks. These ten questions bring them out.

  1. Do you already have fiber in my building? If not, ask who does, what the build would cost and how long it might take.
  2. Do you own the last mile or buy it from someone else? Neither is wrong, but you should know who is responsible when that part fails.
  3. What availability do you commit to, in writing? Look for a stated monthly figure at a named tier. A marketing number is not a contract term.
  4. What is the repair target? Ask whether it runs 24×7 or only in business hours, and whether it is a guarantee or an objective.
  5. What credits do I get if you miss, and how do I claim them? Check the claim deadline and the monthly cap. See understanding SLAs.
  6. Is a truly diverse second path possible here? Two circuits can share a conduit. Ask for separate entrances and separate routes, and ask what the building allows.
  7. Who answers at 2 a.m.? Find out how to open a ticket and whether you reach someone who can see the network.
  8. What does the install depend on? Landlord consent, inside wiring and construction permits often set the real date. Ask who handles each of them.
  9. What happens if I move or leave early? Read the termination terms before you compare monthly prices.
  10. Can you connect my other sites too? One provider for internet, Ethernet, SD-WAN and voice can mean one bill and one support team.

One provider or many?

An aggregator works with many carriers and can compare them for your address. Read the value of a telecom aggregator for how that works.
